Happiness is an awareness of the energy from which everything is made. Therefore, all thoughts are happy thoughts of varying degrees of happiness.
Thus, to be characteristically happy, all you must do is choose your happiest thoughts which by traditional definitions of happiness more thoroughly fulfill its requirements than the rest of your thoughts.
In this sense, the act of being happy is the direct result of the thoughts you think and the extent to which you are happy is equal to the extent your thoughts make you happy.
